Dev Log 1 - Conducting Research for Game Design

During the past two weeks, I was tasked with addressing a design challenge through a research report. The topic I had chosen to research was the dangers of misinformation from social media. From my findings I learned that social media is an excellent platform in order to distribute information across the world however this also causes misinformation to spread just as quickly. A lot of misinformation also gets generated during big events some events I looked at was the 2016 election where the use of misinformation by one of the candidates in order to cause mistrust for the opposing candidate as well as during the COVID-19 pandemic where misinformation about treatments like vaccines was widespread.

From this research, I will be going forward with a game proposal with the basic idea is the player will be playing as a king's advisor in a modern fantasy world. They will use social media in order to inform the king about the happenings in the kingdom and be able to help make informal decisions on new laws and choices for the kingdom. However, there are traps of misinformation possibly conflicting info that could spread maybe even people saying the king is actually evil. It will be the player's duty to confirm whether the information they are reading is correct or maybe they don't use social media and just become the puppeteer of the king and make whatever decisions they want.

Within the game, the player will have to worry about managing the food, money, and morale of the kingdom. Most likely with the less morale the more misinformation will pop up and could get bad as bad propaganda about the king. I am unsure of the full scope but these are the basic ideas I will be working off of.

Interesting way to tackle the social media topic. Misinformation is a pretty big problem on social media, so it's good to see talk about it. It's definitely not a problem that's letting down soon, which is probably why Twitter recently added community notes to their platform, however those are also subject to people griefing them.

I love the fantasy twist on such a modern topic. It's an interesting metaphor, using being a king's advisor and modern monarchy to represent misinformation on social media. The concept of the game sounds very solid, I'm excited to see where you go from here.

Interesting pitch!

The idea of taking a a management simulator of sorts and merging it with the idea of misinformation makes for quite the tricky slope for players, especially depending on how easy the misinformation is to spot. Additionally, seeing the direct consequences of the player's actions also on social media makes for immersive gameplay. I also like how you've made direct reference to current politicians and misinformation spread by them.

Hi Lucy, I totally get what you're saying about social media and misinformation – it's like a double-edged sword, right? Your game idea sounds pretty cool, like you're the king's advisor using social media to run the show, but there's a catch with all the fake news and stuff. And you've got to juggle things like food, money, and morale too, which is interesting. Maybe you could add some clues or ways for players to spot the fake news, and see how their choices affect the kingdom. I'm excited to see how your game turns out!

Hi Lucy, the topics you chose are very poignant; and I love how it ties into the pitch. It could be interesting to also talk about propaganda from the king himself, whether the player is aware or not. Looking forward to the presentation!

I really like the idea of assisting the king in verifying the authenticity of information, particularly considering that various in-game systems such as food and money are intertwined with the quality of information. However, I'm also curious about how will you specifically integrate this into the gameplay of information discernment, as adding too many systems might overshadow the importance of discerning information in the gameplay. I'm looking forward to your follow-up and results.

Hey Lucy,
I really like your idea of playing as a king's advisor who must manage a series of resources. I'm interested to see how you tie in things like the kingdom's food rations into the public perception of royalty.

Hey Lucy

Misinformation is a seriously huge issue. With how easy it is to spread falsehoods and gain a following through said falsehoods, dangerous ideologies could gain power and inflict serious harm. Especially with AI bringing images into a realm of doubt that has never existed before.

I love the game idea that you're going with. Being the one that keeps an entire kingdom together while also trying to figure out which is truth and which is lie sounds like an extremely intensive and high-management game. I can't wait to see what you make!

Hey Lucy I really like your idea,

I think misinformation is a modern topic so merging that with a royal aesthetic is a cool dichotomy. I'm honestly just curious what the player will be doing? I understand resource sims; but what am I managing? Propaganda from the king? bad lines of texts? Reporting bad actors?

Anyhoo, i'm excited to see what you make!

Hey Lucy!

This mix of royalty and social media is really creative to me in this context, especially when compared to real life where they typically use it to either sway public opinion, or avoid it completely. I'm interested to see how you'll utilize politics and branch off the potential outcomes that come with it.
